Project Overview

In 2023 I decided to go after something that I had seen for a while. When we explain concepts it is often done using a medium that the content creator is most comfortable in. But it's often not the best. What if you could learn about Graphic Design concepts by looking at them explained using Graphic Design?

My Aproach

I started off by trying to distill Graphic Design concepts into single panel illustrations. Most of them features a slightly snarky comment at the bottom, to not make the images to preachy. I then ventured into other domains, to test the approach.

Used Technology:
- pen and paper for sketches
- Adobe Illustrator for digital refinement

Graphic Design

My Notes

For me Graphic Design and communication in general is all about embracing constraints. For this aspect of the project I set myself the constraint of trying to communicate one Graphic Design concept visually using only a single panel illustration. What followed was a period where at various points I was close to visual zen, but never really made it. Which was great, it kept me coming back to try again with the next concept.

Physics

My Notes

In the early days of physics researchers used their observational powers to describe what they saw and how they understood it to interact with each other. As we started to rely more and more on machinery to capture the information to support or disprove theories and ideas there has been a noticeable shift towards more abstract representations. I tried to take us back on some of the ideas by showing what they mean when we apply them again to a non scientific visual context.

Business

My Notes

Business is full of concepts. Many of the most successful shifts in business happened because somebody figured out how to apply an idea in this space. I found that a lot of times business becomes easier to grasp when we take ideas and try to move them back into the space where we can see that a concept means in real life.
